Aimee Mann nearly passed on performing “Time Stand Still” with RUSH each night at the recently completed four-date residency at Kia Forum as the band kicked off its highly anticipated “Fifty Something” reunion tour.
The ‘Til Tuesday singer originally performed guest vocals on “Time Stand Still,” only their third guest musician ever at the time, on the band’s 1987 album Hold Your Fire, but never performed it live with RUSH until their June 7th tour launch in Inglewood, California. She then did the same for the next three shows at the venue.
The news of Mann almost passing on the performance comes via her Instagram, where she drew a one-page comic about the experience. The singer has been working on a graphic memoir and has occasionally been posting illustrations to her Instagram in the process.
In the comic strip, Mann wrote, “Way back in March, I got an email from Geddy Lee, from the band RUSH. But I was quite frankly in a shitty place and couldn’t imagine doing it. I was in such a hole I couldn’t even answer one way or the other. I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t try. They were so kind and welcoming. I felt protected by their bubble of music and Canadian warmth, and buoyed aloft by their fans.”
Mann captioned the comic “What I did last week.” In the comments section of the post, Alex Lifeson of RUSH noted, “I looked over at you each night and you looked radiant and assured with each passing moment at your mic. You were magic. ❤️”
Aimee Mann is currently preparing for a slew of tour dates in July including her performance at Bon Iver’s Eauc Claires Festival, which features a varied bill including Lil Yachty, Hotline TNT, and Julianna Barwick & Marty Lattimore (get tickets here).
RUSH, meanwhile, continue their on-going “Fifty Something” reunion tour through December. Get tickets here.
