Andrew Bird has opened up about his love of Mexican and Brazilian music as he prepares to return to Mexico City for a pair of orchestral concerts in October, saying music can transcend language even when he doesn’t understand the lyrics.
“A lot of the music I listen to isn’t performed in my native language and I don’t understand what’s being said,” Bird told Mexican news site Marvin. “Brazilian, Cuban and Mexican music that I love, for example. But it reaches me.”
Bird will perform at Mexico City’s Teatro de la Ciudad on October 27th and 28th, marking his first concerts in Mexico backed by an orchestra. The shows will revisit his 2005 album Andrew Bird & the Mysterious Production of Eggs, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year.
Speaking about translating the record to an orchestral setting, Bird said he approaches the musicians as if they were a band, with particular attention paid to rhythm and groove.
