Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong dedicated a performance of Nirvana’s “Drain You” to late L7 bassist Jennifer Finch while playing a show with his band The Coverups on Monday night at the Roxy in West Hollywood, California.

Finch had died just a couple days earlier at the age of 59, less than a week after her battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer was revealed. Armstrong’s wife, Adrienne, was listed as one of the top donors on a GoFundMe campaign for Finch with a $5,000 contribution.

“This song goes out to Jennifer Finch from L7,” said Billie Joe from the stage as he and the Coverups launched into a faithful cover of the Nevermind classic.

Dedicating a Nirvana song to Finch made sense, as she had close ties to the seminal grunge band. She dated drummer Dave Grohl in the early ’90s, and they were together when Nevermind blew up into a multiplatinum phenomenon.

Later this summer, Billie Joe will pay tribute to the Ramones as part of a supergroup with Rancid’s Tim Armstrong, blink-182’s Travis Barker, and onetime Ramones bassist CJ Ramone. Together, they will perform Ramones songs at an official 50th anniversary celebration at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on August 30th.

L7, meanwhile, will embark on a fall North American leg of their “Last Hurrah” farewell tour, having received Finch’s blessing prior to her passing. The outing kicks off October 9th in Phoenix, and runs through a November 14th show in Los Angeles (pick up tickets here).
