Bob Dylan is apparently shaking up his guitarists amid his ongoing US tour.

Over the weekend, Dylan’s acoustic guitar player, Bob Britt, seemed to announce his departure from the tour. In a cryptic social post, which seems to have been deleted but not before being spread online by Dylan fans, Britt posted “Sayonara Bobby” with an image of a plane route from Austin, Texas to Nashville on a day off from tour just before a June 29th concert in Austin. In a supposed comment that also spread before being deleted, Britt said “I quit,” leading fans to speculate that the guitarist who has played with Dylan since 2019 bailed on the tour.

The apparent parting of ways by Britt followed a more enigmatic step-away by Dylan’s electric guitarist Doug Lancio, who has been part of the live band since 2021. Lancio’s departure was reported by the Los Angeles Times in a review of Dylan’s June 17th concert in Santa Barbara, which noted that the electric player wasn’t on stage and had been replaced by jazz guitar sensation Julian Lage.

Lage appeared a part of Dylan’s band in the shows that followed the Santa Barbara date. Whether the ringer is permanent is still in question. Dylan hasn’t said anything about either guitar players leaving his group and hasn’t commented on if Lage is on the tour for the long haul or a new band member. Lage also has a concert scheduled the same day Dylan and his band is set to play in Austin. Lage’s has another date in July that conflicts with Dylan’s Kansas City, Missouri concert. The conflicts have led to whispers that Lage is just filling in for some shows.

Dylan kicked off his summer tour in early June with a set that included deep cuts and covers. The folk hero continues the tour until August. Fans can find tickets here.
