Bon Iver Retires, Recruits Replacement in Music Video for “Day One”: Watch

All good things must come to an end, and even Bon Iver is now hanging up his wool hat.

At least that’s the chuckle-inducing premise of the new music video for “Day One” (featuring Dijon and Flock of Dimes). Here, the clip for the SABLE, fABLE standout posits a world in which Justin Vernon has abruptly abandoned his role as bearded, heartfelt frontman, hosting a casting call for someone else to become “America’s Next Top Bon Iver.”

And in addition to a slew of bearded dudes who fit the part to varying degrees, the process features cameos from Cristin Milioti, Jacob Elordi, St. Vincent’s Annie Clark, Flock of Dimes’ Jenn Wasner, and Dijon, among many others, each getting their “Bon Iver” on. Even Vernon himself shows up — perhaps he realized his unshakable existential connection to the project? (Or, he just really needs the health insurance, yeah?)

So, who deserves to be Bon Iver this time around? Miloti sure has the personality and force to make it happen. And a bearded Elordi even brings a certain oomph and sex appeal that might redefine the project itself. But for this writer’s money, Clark really deserves a second or third look. It would be far easier on music nerds if Bon Iver and St. Vincent were the same dang person, after all. Decide for yourself as you watch the video below.
