Boston has announced a 50th anniversary edition of their legendary self-titled debut album due out in 2027. The news came on the actual 50th anniversary of the album’s release (August 25th).
The reissue is set to contain the “long lost” demos bandleader Tom Scholz presented to labels to get his band signed.
Scholz, an MIT graduated, famously recorded much of the album himself in his apartment, modifying equipment and producing unique guitar effects using his engineering degree to shape the iconic sound of the debut. These restored and remastered demos have never been released to the public before despite the legend behind their story.
The album went on to become one of the most successful debuts in music history, selling a whopping 17 million copies in the US alone, and featuring a tracklist where nearly every song was a radio hit, including the iconic “More Than a Feeling.”
A press release states, “Wishing to offer something truly unique to the millions of Boston fans who’ve supported the band through the years, Tom has — for the very first time — dug deep into his massive archive of recordings to find the long-lost, previously-unreleased demos he famously shopped to the labels before being signed by Epic Records. He painstakingly restored and remastered these elusive treasures with the help of producer, digital expert and Boston guitarist Gary Pihl, exclusively for this 50th anniversary release.”
The album reissue will come in several formats, including a black double-LP, a limited edition pearl gold double-LP, and an SACD hybrid disc. The demos are included as a second LP with the original album taking up the first platter. The pearl gold special edition also comes with a guitar pick and a special poster.
Boston’s 50th anniversary edition of their debut album is available for pre-order from Impex Records now. While no exact release date has been announced, it is expected to ship in the second quarter of 2027.
