Brandon Flowers Has Considered Quitting Music: “Why Am I Doing it Anyway?”

As he further promotes his latest solo album, The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers has revealed that he’s been contemplating quitting music.

Speaking with The Times, Flowers said that lately he’s been thinking long and hard about his own longevity. With The Killers having formed way back in 2001, it’s only natural that Flowers (who turned 45 back in June) would be thinking about some future outside of music.

“I’m really going through it right now: How much longer do I want to do this, what does it mean, why am I doing it anyway?” Flowers said. “Whenever I finish a tour, without fail I get sick.”

It’s not just post-tour crud, though. Flowers also said that he looks at his father’s day-to-day, and wonders if he needs music to be happy. Said Flowers, “My dad goes to yard sales, where he buys frames to take home and paint. He’s never had any money in his life and he’s happier than I am.”

But it’s another elderly man in his life that has ultimately helped Flowers decide that the rock star life is still the way to go – for now, at least.

“Then I think of Mick Jagger and ask myself: What keeps him getting up on that stage? I guess it’s because there are powerful moments in a concert,” Flowers said, adding, “How could I not want to do that?” (For his part, Jagger is not exactly a fan of getting older, either.)

If anything, it’s this kind of deep reflection that led to THRASHER, Flowers’ first solo album since 2015’s The Desired Effect (which followed 2010’s Flamingo). In a recent promo video for the record, Flowers said, “I’ve unlocked a room that feels like it’s been waiting for me all along — country and western music. My father’s music. It has offered itself to me and the stories I have to tell at the moment with a breezy enthusiasm.”
