Chad Hugo, formerly of the Virginia-bred super-producer team The Neptunes, has struck out with a brand new single, “Jumpupw!nya.” The song features guest verses from Philly MC Tierra Whack and Brooklyn/Virginia rapper Leikeli47. Stream it below.
According to a press release, the track marks Hugo’s first major solo release in years and “signals the beginning of a new creative era.” Sonically, Hugo hasn’t lost a step, as “Jumpupw!nya” is as thrumming and chaotic as it is genuinely beautiful in some areas. The production takes different forms throughout the song, soaring and halting unexpectedly, with Leikeli47 attacking the beat first: “Gangsters and the bourgeois, I make ’em all dance/ Hypnotize minds, got ’em all in a trance.”
“For those that don’t know, I’m from Brooklyn by way of Virginia,” Leikeli47 said in a press release. “So when Chad called, I leapt at the opportunity to collaborate. Love to the amazing Tierra Whack. I’m just happy to play my part.”
Together, the MCs ring the school bell for a playful pair of verses over Hugo’s vibrant production. Tierra Whack’s contribution is just as charismatic as Leikeli47’s, and it’s expectedly animated: “I just might Crash, Bandicoot/ I can move some bags and they full of loot.”
The song scratches a satisfying, marketable itch, and plays like it would be the perfect soundtrack for sports bumpers.
