Cult of Luna have released “A Way Back,” the second single from the Swedish metal band’s upcoming album In the Shadow of Your Shadow, due out November 6th via RED CRK Recordings. It follows the album’s title track, which was released in June.

Co-vocalist and guitarist Fredrik Kihlberg said of the track, “I often find myself trying to describe a recurring feeling, the sensation of being lost, trapped, or both, and the struggle to find a way out. A way back to yourself, to a safe space, or simply finding a way to make it through when anxiety overwhelms you: at its core, that’s what this song is about.

“A Way Back” is a heavy ballad, reminiscent somewhat of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” or Pain of Salvation’s quieter material. They show an excellent use of texture, with the simple melody and progression buffeted by well-layered acoustic and electric guitars, piano, synth, sound effects, and percussion. The song feels oceanic and vast with an earworm folk melody underpinning the slow brooding atmosphere.

Founder, singer, and guitarist Johannes Persson said of the upcoming album, “Stagnation is the only thing that scares me. I’ve said this in every interview I’ve done for the past 25 years: I don’t care whether or not people think we’re repeating ourselves. As long as we feel like we aren’t, we will continue to do this”
