David Lee Roth has abruptly canceled the remainder of his tour amidst rumors of low ticket sales.
The North American tour, which launched in April, was originally set to run until August after a second set of dates were added. However, all upcoming gigs have been scrapped except for the August 7th show at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. No reason was given for the canceled dates.
Fellow former Van Halen singer and longtime rival Sammy Hagar reacted to the news with a video posted to social media.
Hagar said, “Hey, Dave. Sammy here. I just got a call from Michael Anthony … about your tour getting canceled. And I wanna say from the bottom of my heart, I’m sorry. I hope you’re well. I hope there’s not a physical problem.”
He went on to say, “Honestly, Mike and I love the fact that you’ve been out there doing it, supporting the greatest band in the world that we were both part of. And, yeah, I’m really sorry. That’s fucked up. Supporting what we did in this band to keep this music alive. You and I, Mikey, Al, Ed cannot be replaced. So, when you’re ready to carry on, you go, brother. Mike and I support you.”
Hagar then invited Roth to join him at his upcoming Las Vegas residency, saying, “Come to Vegas for the residency in September. Come on, join us. Sing a couple songs, MC the damn show. Come out and just do what the fuck you do – which is pretty damn entertaining! Anyway, hope you’re well. I really do. God bless, brother.”
Both Hagar and Roth have been performing Van Halen material, with Diamond Dave’s sets made up album entirely of Van Halen songs. Meanwhile, Hagar has been repping the legendary band under the “Best of All Worlds” banner with fellow Van Halen alumnus Michael Anthony on bass, as well as Joe Satriani on guitar and Kenny Aronoff on drums.
Given DLR’s recent statements about feeling “rich” given the sale of his publishing rights, it we’re sure the singer is still doing okay despite the tour cancellation.
