Death Cab for Cutie have released a new single, “Punching the Flowers,” the second from their forthcoming album I Built You a Tower. Alongside the new song, the band put out a video. Watch it below.

On the track, singer Benjamin Gibbard spins the real experience of watching a toddler throwing a tantrum and punching flowers into a metaphor for a man who has something beautiful and sees it as a frustrating cage.

“‘Punching the Flowers’ is a song about stagnation and the feeling of being imprisoned by The Known. And about the damage done when someone ventures deeper into the unknown,” Gibbard explained in a statement.

The video is directed by filmmaker Jason Lester.

The latest single follows “Riptides,” which the band unveiled in March with the announcement that I Built You a Tower, the band’s first record in four years, will come out on June 5th via ANTI-Records.

Bassist Nick Harmer said making the record “got us back to the earliest versions of this band: If the musicians in the room like what we’re working on, that’s enough. We reconnected with the confidence that comes with that.”

Death Cab for Cutie will be touring this summer in support of the new record, hitting cities like Los Angeles, Toronto, and Philadelphia among others. Look for tickets here.
