Deep Purple have unveiled the new song “Arrogant Boy” as the lead single from the legendary rock band’s recently announced 24th album SPLAT!, which is set for release on July 3rd.

The song, which is the opening track of SPLAT!, showcases a rapid-fire riff from Simon McBride mirroring the feel of classic Deep Purple tracks like “Space Truckin'” and “Highway Star.” It also has a proggy instrumental centerpiece including a unison riff between the keys and guitar, some proto-prog late ’60s psychedelia, and a more atmospheric stretch that wouldn’t have been out of place on a Yes album.

Singer Ian Gillan stated, “‘Arrogant Boy’ is the story of Billy who couldn’t read or write. He is unhappy with things, so he speaks up, and finds a way of irritating, one way or another, the elite. And I can’t think of anything more fun than irritating the elite. It would be a joyous exercise for me every morning after coffee.”

Deep Purple are set to support SPLAT! with a previously announced summer North American headlining tour featuring Kansas and Jefferson Starship (select dates) as support. Pick up tickets here.
