Duran Duran have reunited with Nile Rodgers for their glossy new song, “Free to Love.” Stream it below.
Co-written by Rodgers, the upbeat song combines disco and funk with new wave. “Free to love/ Be free to win or lose,” Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon sings on the chorus. “Free to love/ Do what you want to do/ Free to love/ Be free to see it through.”
In the accompanying music video, directed by Jonas Åkerlund (Madonna, Beyoncé, Metallica, Lady Gaga), Duran Duran and Rodgers deliver a performance meant to evoke retro music shows, complete with disco balls and enthusiastic dancers. Watch it below.
“‘Free to Love’ is disco for the 2020s,” Le Bon explained in a statement. “It’s about freedom; it’s about loving the modern world instead of hating it, and that is something we need right now. Be free! Be free to love!”
Keyboardist Nick Rhodes added, “Every time we plug in and play with Nile, the electricity he generates could light up a whole city. We share a common belief that music is a force for good and something that brings positive energy into the world.”
Rodgers echoed those sentiments in a statement of his own: “My love for Duran Duran, and what our music together has always been about, is the love we share for our song’s deepest meanings. Whatever chaos is going on outside, inside the studio, we’re free to love our peace.”
Duran Duran and Rodgers first collaborated on a remix of the band’s 1984 hit “The Reflex,” their first single to top the Billboard Hot 100. He also produced on their 2004 album, Astronaut, and more recently, played guitar on 2015’s “Pressure Off.”
In May, Duran Duran will headline BeachLife Festival in Redondo Beach, California, ahead of a four-show Las Vegas residency at Fontainebleau. After that, they will embark on a month-long run through Europe. Get tickets for all their upcoming shows here.
