Ed Sheeran’s decision to drop Macklemore from his ongoing US stadium tour over the rapper’s pro-Palestine advocacy has drawn criticism from several of Sheeran’s own fan-run social media accounts.
As of Tuesday morning, at least three Sheeran fan accounts have posted statements in response to the decision. @LoopTourUA said it was “deeply saddened & disappointed by Ed & his team’s decisions,” adding, “It is not a political stance to be against the massacre of innocent people and their homes, and we hope Ed Sheeran can see this and reflect on his decisions.” In light of the developments, @LoopTourUA said it would take a break from providing updates about Sheeran’s shows, “except if they are related to the Macklemore ‘boycott.'”
@EdSheeranBrCom, which has more than 45,000 followers, said it stood “in solidarity with Macklemore and with all the people who continue to use their voices to call for an end to the violence and to defend the lives of the Palestinian people.”
The account added, “We hope that Ed can also reflect on everything that happened and understand that, in the face of certain injustices, remaining silent or trying not to choose a side is also a stance. We continue to admire his work, as always.”
Similarly, @InfoEdSheeran said it was also standing in solidarity with Macklemore and would stop covering the remainder of Sheeran’s US “Loop Tour.” “We hope that, by the time the Latin America shows come around, Ed will have sought to educate himself, made amends, and set aside this position of neutrality, which is nothing more than support for the stronger side,” the account said.
On Monday, Macklemore revealed that he had been dropped as the opening act for the remainder of Ed Sheeran’s US stadium tour after Patriots owner Robert Kraft threatened to block him from performing at Gillette Stadium and rallied other stadium owners to do the same. In the statement, Macklemore also recounted his conversations with Sheeran, who he said “was in a fucked up position” but ultimately chose to maintain an “apolitical” stance.
“[Sheeran] told me that the words ‘Free Palestine’ and the image of the Palestinian flag were hurtful to a lot of people he spoke with,” Macklemore said. “I told him that if those words were more offensive than tens of thousands of Palestinian children being killed by Israel, then there was a fundamental disconnect between where those people stood and where I stood. But he couldn’t get past his public facing, ‘I don’t take sides.'”
Sheeran himself has yet to publicly address the matter.
