GWAR have been destroying various galaxies for 40 years, and their long history is currently on display as the “LET THERE BE GWAR” exhibit at Los Angeles’ Beyond the Streets gallery.
“For 40 years, GWAR have mounted a misanthropic critique of American culture dressed up as shock rock,” stated the band. “This collection of artifacts offers a sense of the unique punk-inspired anti-art aesthetics of underground comics, science fiction fandom, role-playing games, and satirical splatter flick nerdishness at the heart of the band.”
Roger Gastman, founder of Beyond the Streets, added, “This isn’t just a music exhibition. GWAR represents one of the most successful long-term art collectives in American culture, and their influence on both underground and mainstream entertainment is undeniable. They came to destroy… and ended up creating something eternal.”
The exhibit is free to attend from Wednesdays through Sundays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., running through November 2nd at 434 N La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles, with more info available at the Beyond the Streets website.
Heavy Consequence attended the opening night of the “LET THERE BE GWAR” exhibit, featuring a stripped-down performance from the band itself. See our photos of the exhibit and video footage below.
Fans can also catch GWAR on their current fall North American tour with Helmet and Dwarves, running through a November 22nd show in Norfolk, Virginia. Pick up tickets here.
Heads Up: GWAR’s Bud of Gods collection is currently up to 65% off at the Consequence Shop.
