A casting switcharoo has occurred at Hogwarts: Nicholas Hoult has exited the second season of HBO’s Harry Potter series (likely to be entitled Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, following the title of the book being adapted). Instead, the role of Gilderoy Lockhart will be played by another brunette actor, as Game of Thrones and Industry alum Kit Harington has come on board to fill the role.
According to Deadline, the official cause for Hoult’s departure is scheduling reasons. However, this does mean the Superman actor won’t be pushed on future red carpets and junkets about working on the controversial series, which has drawn criticism thanks to the anti-trans activism of author/executive producer J.K. Rowling.
Harington has already played the role of Gilderoy Lockhart for the recent full-cast audio Harry Potter adaptations. TBD on whether he’ll wear a wig, dye his hair, or play a brown-haired version of the professor when he makes his screen debut.
The second season of Harry Potter is set to begin production now. Season 1 will premiere Christmas Day 2026 on HBO and HBO Max.
