Apple just announced its first-ever foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, on Wednesday, September 9th, but it is already facing early scrutiny. Lefties have pointed out that the device may not have been designed with their ergonomics in mind.
“Just realized that the iPhone Duo isn’t going to work for me since the controls are for right handed operation,” MacRumors contributing writer Steve Moser wrote on X/Twitter. “I’m a phone in the left pocket, keys in the right pocket kind of guy. My left hand has learned to operate a smart phone and my right hand does everything else. Even if Apple added an accessibility option to flip the display 180 the ergonomics for Touch ID wouldn’t work.”
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256 GB of storage and is set for release on October 23rd. When it’s folded closed, the Touch ID sensor and Camera Control button are located on the right edge. This would suggest one-handed operation is easier when held in your right hand. For comparison, the iPhone 18 Pro positions the power and camera buttons on the right side, with the Action button and volume controls on the left.
In a poll posted on the MacRumors forums, nearly half of the voters said “the handedness of the UI” will impact them greatly.
“Apple has traditionally ignored user interface inconveniences for left handed people, but with the inside screen being so heavily right handed in UI placement it may actually be a problem and not just an inconvenience,” wrote user thejadedmonkey.
However, forum user gloss observed that the iPhone Duo is held left-handed in “many of the marketing photos,” while another user, Starlifter, pointed out that southpaws are “used to living in a right-handed world” and adapt by becoming ambidextrous.
Not only that, but Apple could already have a solution for this potential design flaw in the accessibility settings, as forum member DaveOP suggested.
According to a 2022 study published in the National Library of Medicine database, 10.6% of the population favors using their left hand for motor tasks. With the iPhone Duo not launching for another month, we’ll have to wait and see whether southpaws adjust to its design.
Veteran iPhone users may remember the “you’re holding it wrong” controversy in 2010, when Steve Jobs responded to left-handed users’ complaints about reception drops by saying, “If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.”
