Veteran actor James Handy, who most recently played Jimmy in Top Gun: Maverick, was stabbed to death by his girlfriend’s son in Los Angeles on Wednesday morning. He was 81.
According to the LAPD, they were alerted to the crime when a man called 911 and said, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.” Arriving at a residence in Tarzana around 9:30 a.m., police found Handy unconscious in the front yard with a stab wound in the chest.
Handy was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators have identified 44-year-old Michael Gledhill as the suspect. According to a statement, Gledhill flagged down responding officers and told them that “he was the one they were looking for.”
Gledhill lived at the home with his mother and Handy. He was arrested and transported to Van Nuys Jail, where he was booked on suspicion of murder and is being held on $2 million bail.
Handy’s many film roles include appearances in Top Gun: Maverick, Logan, Jumanji, The Rocketeer, and Arachnophobia. He also appeared in two seasons of NYPD Blue and multiple episodes of Beverly Hills, 90210, Melrose Place, Alias, and The Profiler. Additionally, he played a local detective in an episode of The X-Files.
