Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted is set to kick off his first proper tour with his long-running project Jason Newsted & The Chophouse Band, In advance of the outing, Heavy Consequence caught up with the veteran musician to get the scoop on what fans can expect from their upcoming live shows.

Newsted and company’s tour launches tonight, July 1st, in Northampton, Massachusetts, and finishes up with two dates at the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee on July 24th and 25th. The run is split fairly evenly between headlining shows (tickets here) and gigs supporting Blackberry Smoke (tickets here).

While the Chophouse Band has been around since 1992, they’ve only played one-off shows here and there until now. Newsted, who recently revealed that he battled and beat throat cancer, tells us in the video above that the timing was finally ideal for a proper tour.

“I think that the planets aligned in a certain way,” said Newsted. “I did manifest it, I must say. When you get put in check by something [like cancer] that’s so much more powerful than you, then you rethink things. I’m not gonna be this rubbery and this age forever, and want to get out there. I miss playing for people.”

Newsted went on to extoll the virtues of the individual members of the band, which is comprised of himself on vocals and guitar, Jesse Farnsworth on guitar, Jimbo Hart on bass, Humberto Perez on guitar, and Rob Tucker on drums.
