HBO has announced JAŸ-Z IN 8, an eight-part documentary in conversation with and directed by legendary producer Rick Rubin. The network has also provided a glimpse into the docuseries with a teaser trailer, which you can watch below.

In the 40-second clip, JAY-Z opens up about using his lyrics to “articulate” the pain of what “we were going through.” Rubin adds, “Without the pain, you wouldn’t have done the work.”

“So the pain, we don’t say it’s necessary, we don’t say you need it, but if it’s there… you use it,” the rapper concludes.

JAŸ-Z IN 8 will premiere this fall on HBO and will stream on HBO Max.

2026 has served as a celebration of the 30th anniversary of JAY-Z’s debut album, Reasonable Doubt, featuring reissues and HOV’s first shows in several years.

In late May, JAY-Z made his live comeback at the Roots Picnic, notably dissing Drake, Kanye West, and Nicki Minaj in a freestyle. In July, he will play a trio of Yankee Stadium shows, featuring full performances of Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint on back-to-back nights, followed by what’s being billed as an “Extra Innings” concert.

This fall, JAY-Z will stage more headlining shows at Paris’ Stade de France on Thursday, September 10th, and Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium on Friday, October 23rd. Get tickets to all of his upcoming dates here.
