During The Strokes’ headlining set at Just Like Heaven 2026 on Saturday night, August 22nd, lead singer Julian Casablancas said he felt like a “silly fucking goose.” As part of his onstage banter, he called LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy the “Brett Favre of indie rock.” “What a pleasant surprise. I thought you retired 15 years ago… just kidding,” Casablancas said (via Grimy Goods) about his fellow headliner, joking that The Strokes would retire to “make it cooler when we play a show in two years.”
LCD Soundsystem announced their breakup in 2011 and played a farewell show at New York’s Madison Square Garden — only to reunite five years later at Coachella 2016. Meanwhile, former Packers quarterback Favre teased retirement in 2006, only to have second thoughts and return for the 2007 season. He then officially retired in March 2008 and had another change of heart that summer, played in the 2008 season for the Jets, and retired/unretired once more to close out his career with the Vikings.
The Strokes are touring North America in support of their latest album, Reality Awaits.
