Linda Perhacs, the psychedelic folk singer-songwriter behind the cult classic 1970 album Parallelograms, has been reported missing.
The 82-year-old musician’s friends and collaborators, including former manager Laurel Stearns, Julia Holter, filmmaker Jessica Hundley, and dublab co-founder Mark McNeill, issued a joint public appeal for information about her whereabouts this week.
According to the statement, Perhacs left a residential care facility roughly eight months ago while under the supervision of her legal guardian. Those close to the singer say they have been unable to get in touch with her since, while efforts to contact her guardian have also gone unanswered. They are now asking for the public’s help to locate Perhacs and confirm her well-being.
Perhacs released Parallelograms in 1970 while working as a dental hygienist in Los Angeles. The album received little attention upon release, but was rediscovered decades later and inspired a new generation of admirers and artists including Sufjan Stevens, Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, and Holter. Her music has also been sampled by artists like Prefuse 73, Jadakiss, and Daft Punk.
The new wave of interest brought Perhacs back to recording more than 40 years after her debut. She released her sophomore album, The Soul of All Natural Things, in 2014, followed by her third and most recent album, I’m a Harmony, in 2017.
