Lionel Richie has been hospitalized for atrial fibrillation — an irregular heartbeat — and has canceled three upcoming shows with Earth, Wind & Fire as he undergoes treatment.
Per TMZ, the singer and R&B icon underwent a minimally invasive procedure to treat the condition. The treatment creates tiny scars in the heart to block faulty electrical signals and help restore a normal rhythm. As he recovers, Richie has canceled the next three dates on his “Sing a Song All Night Long Tour” with Earth, Wind & Fire: September 26th in San Francisco, September 30th in Chicago, and October 2nd in Columbus.
“Lionel underwent a common procedure for Atrial fibrillation (AFib),” Richie’s representative said in a statement. “The doctor said everything went perfectly… Lionel is doing great but will take some time off and will be back on stage soon.”
Richie has been hospitalized multiple times over the past year. In June, he was rushed to the hospital after feeling “dizzy” and “strange” during a performance in Minnesota, cutting his set short as he was taken away by paramedics. The incident led to the postponement of his Chicago and Columbus shows with Earth, Wind & Fire, which were rescheduled for this fall. Then, in August, Richie was hospitalized in St. Louis and spent three days in the ICU undergoing tests for cardiac issues.
Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire’s next stretch of tour dates in Las Vegas — set for October 14th through November 14th — are currently confirmed to take place. Get tickets to see them here.
