Last year, amid a nationwide tour celebrating the 35th anniversary of Home Alone, Macaulay Culkin shared an original idea he had conceived for a sequel.
“I’m either a widower or a divorcee. I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard and I’m not really paying enough attention, and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me, and then I get locked out,” Culkin explained.
“My son won’t let me in,” he continued. “And he’s the one setting traps for me. The house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship.”
Apparently, Disney took notice of Culkin’s pitch and liked it enough to reportedly meet with the actor about bringing the idea to life. On the latest episode of his podcast The Town, Puck’s Matt Belloni revealed that Culkin was recently spotted on Disney’s Hollywood lot, adding that the studio is “salivating” over the possibility of relaunching the Home Alone franchise.
“Macaulay Culkin is having his ass kissed like nobody’s business,” Beloni said. “They’re offering him another movie, like he could do his own passion project, if he would also do another Home Alone. [He has] a good idea. I’ve talked to people who have heard it, and it’s a really good idea for a Home Alone reboot with Macaulay Culkin. If that happens and they restart the Home Alone franchise, that would be gigantic for the next 10 years. Because that movie, as you know, is perennially top of the streaming lists from October through Christmas.”
After shying away from his childhood role of Kevin McAllister in Home Alone for decades, Culkin has come to embrace it in recent years, reprising the character in commercials for Google (see above), Uber Eats, and Home Instead, as well as embarking on an anniversary tour last year.
The actor has also experienced a career resurgence in recent years with roles in American Horror Story, The Righteous Gemstones, and Fallout.
