Mike D has announced his debut solo album, Thank You, set for release on August 28th. As the latest preview, he has released his new single, “True Colors.” Stream it below.

Hailed as coming from Mike D 5D, Thank You originates from sessions at Mike D’s home studio with his sons, Skyler and Davis. This first full-length offering of new music from a Beastie Boys member since 2011’s Hot Sauce Committee Part Two expanded to collaborations across multiple locations with Carter Lang, Jared Solomon, Ging, Jason Lader, Eddie Ruscha, and Tyran Donaldson. Pre-orders are ongoing.

“It’s been so much fun making this music with people I love and I have grown to really appreciate in our collaboration,” Mike D said in a statement. “And I just hope it’s fun for others and not overly serious, because let’s be real, I’m releasing this music into a very strange and dark and power-fixated world that really devalues art and feelings and compassion and empathy and equality.”

“True Colors” shares a psychedelic rock feel with previous singles “Switch Up” and “What We Got,” but doesn’t feature the Beastie Boy rapping. Instead, he sings lyrics like, “Something special it’s better/ Having secrets is better/ Like someone stupid think they’re clever/ Get it now or do it never.”

The touring Mike D 5D band features Mike D, Skyler, and Davis, joined by Eddie Ruscha, Will Graefe, and Milo Ruscha. They recently played shows in Southern California — including a surprise pop-up at Ojai Valley Women’s Club — and Brooklyn, New York.

For the remainder of June, they are set to play shows in Europe, including festival appearances at Primavera Sound in Porto and Beyond the Streets in Paris. Get tickets through viagogo or Mike D’s official website.
