A new development in the case against Nick Reiner, who stands accused of murdering his parents Rob Reiner and Michelle Singer: According to The New York Times, the L.A. County district attorney’s office will not be pursuing the death penalty in the case.
District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman stated in a press conference that the decision was made after a “rigorous review” of “the aggravating factors as well as the mitigating factors.” Added Hochman, “We did speak with Nick Reiner’s siblings… They made their views very clear. We took their views into consideration in ultimately deciding not to seek the death penalty.”
Technically, California still has the death penalty, though it is one of four states where there has been a pause on executions by executive action. Reiner, who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was reportedly experiencing issues with his medication at the time of the murders, will face a maximum sentence of life in prison with no parole if he is convicted.
