At this year’s VMAs (which are still a thing), MTV (which is still a thing) will honor Nirvana (a band which hasn’t been a thing in more than 30 years) as its 2026 Video Vanguard recipient.
The timing and rationale for bestowing this accolade on Nirvana aren’t particularly clear. However, the band obviously shares a deep history with the VMAs, having memorably played the awards show in 1992, where they teased the opening chords of “Rape Me” before pivoting into “Lithium”. That same night, Courtney Love also famously jawed at Axl Rose, sparking a backstage confrontation between the Guns N’ Roses frontman and Kurt Cobain. Nirvana returned to the VMAs in 1993, and surviving members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic appeared in 1994 to accept trophies following Cobain’s death.
The 2026 VMAs are scheduled for September 27th and will air on CBS and MTV, while streaming on Paramount+. It’s unclear whether Grohl and/or Novoselic plan to attend the ceremony to accept the honor or perform. Grohl’s current band, Foo Fighters, have a concert scheduled in Las Vegas the night before, but have nothing on the docket for September 27th. Nirvana mark the first rock band to receive the Video Vanguard Award since Duran Duran in 2003. Most recipents include Mariah Carey, Katy Perry, Shakira, Nicki Minaj, Missy Elliott, Jennifer Lopez, P!NK, and Rihanna.
