Rosalía has revealed that Bono reached out to her for some Spanish-language advice while working on U2’s upcoming song inspired by the singer, “The Mirror Maker (Rosalía).” Unfortunately for the Irish rock legend, she wasn’t much help.

During her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday Rosalía explained that although she has never met Bono, the two have exchanged messages about the track, which appears on U2’s upcoming album Carnaval de Luz.

“He was asking me if it made sense, certain words,” she recalled, explaining that one of them sounded like “marmalade.” After looking it up and finding no equivalent in standard Spanish, she told him, “Feel free to invent your own language.”

Rosalía described the tribute as “mind-blowing,” particularly because she grew up listening to U2.

Bono recently explained the inspiration behind the song in an interview with Rolling Stone, describing Rosalía as an artist willing to look beyond conventional boundaries. “She’s arrived at the same point just before us, which is annoying and also really inspiring,” he said. He also revealed that Penélope Cruz encouraged him to contact Rosalía.

Elsewhere in the interview, Rosalía recalled attempting to attend a Sunday service at Harlem’s Abyssinian Baptist Church. After getting dressed up and waiting in line in the freezing cold, she was turned away because the church was full.

“God said no, but my outfit said yes,” she joked, adding that she ended up buying shoes instead.
