Matt Reeves has been slowly unveiling the cast for The Batman: Part II on social media ahead of the film’s long-awaited production start. After revealing a number of expected returning cast members, the filmmaker has now officially confirmed that Scarlett Johansson, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and Sebastian Stan will be joining the DC Universe.

Johansson has been attached to the project since late last year, but Reeves confirmed it by posting a gif of the actress in Under the Skin. That might be a bit of a character hint, as the clip sees the former Marvel star looking not unlike Gilda Dent, a character she’s been rumored to be portraying in The Batman sequel. Gilda is the wife of Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face, who is being played by Johansson’s fellow Avenger, Sebastian Stan (whom Reeves also has confirmed). In the comics (spoiler), Gilda eventually becomes the serial killer Holiday in one of the most celebrated Batman stories, The Long Halloween.

Another MCU actor appearing is Henry, who played who played Phastos in the ill-fated Eternals. This also marks his second appearance in the Bat-Verse, having previously had the role of Carl the Arkham Asylum clerk in Joker. As for whom he might be portraying in The Batman: Part II, Reeves’ GIF of choice comes from If Beale Street Could Talk, in which Henry plays a recent parole; extrapolate what you will.

Dance, meanwhile, was first reported in connection with The Batman sequel back in April. Though still unconfirmed, Deadline reported the he would be playing Christopher Dent, Two-Face’s abusive, alcoholic father. Again, Reeves may be hinting at this by making the announcement with a GIF of Dance as Game of Thrones’ Tywin Lannister, another abusive fictional father.

Another actor coming aboard is Sebastian Koch, who’s had roles in A Good Day to Die Hard, Bridge of Spies, and Homeland. The GIF Reeves used for Koch comes from his secret antagonist role in the fifth Die Hard film, shared with the caption “locked and loaded for Gotham.” If we tilt towards the bad guy hint, Hugo Strange could be plausible given The Long Halloween’s connection to Arkham Asylum (though Strange doesn’t appear in that comic series), or if the “for Gotham” bit hints more towards a non-villainous role, perhaps Koch as Detective Harvey Bullock makes sense.

Beginning on Wednesday, May 13th, Reeves has been posting gifs confirming his cast for The Batman: Part II. Returning cast members include Robert Pattinson (Batman/Bruce Wayne), Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth), Jeffrey Wright (James Gordon), Colin Farrell (The Penguin), Jayme Lawson (Mayor Bella Reál, and Gil Perez-Abraham (Officer Martinez). Notably absent from the returning list is Zoë Kravitz, though it’s long been known she was unlikely to reprise her role of Catwoman in Part II.

After years of delays due to the 2023 union strikes and Reeves finalizing the script, The Batman: Part II is scheduled to begin filming in June in England. Earlier this month, Reeves also shared images of camera tests showing the Batmobile driving through snow and an explosion. The movie is currently set for release on October 1st, 2027.
