Sepultura are currently in the midst of an extensive farewell tour that will culminate on a yet-to-be-announced date in São Paulo in the legendary thrash-metal band’s home country of Brazil. However, fans hoping to see a reunion with founding members Max and Iggor Cavalera for the final concert won’t get their wish.
In a new interview with Metal Hammer, longtime Sepultura guitarist Andreas Kisser revealed that the band did reach out to the Cavalera brothers to invite them to take part in the final show, but Max and Iggor declined the invitation.
“We did invite the Cavalera brothers [to reunite with Sepultura at the final show],” said Kisser. “I spoke to Iggor personally on a phone call a few months ago and we started some communication. Even our managers went to talk to their management and stuff. But, they don’t want to be a part of it, and that’s OK. It’s a choice.”
Kisser added that he wished the Cavaleras had said yes, noting, “It would make sense to have a celebration at the end, for the fans, and just to enjoy ourselves onstage… like it was on [our 1996 album] Roots, you know? Despite all the fucking crazy stuff around it, we managed to make that album and finish what we had to do.”
Singer-guitarist Max parted ways with Sepultura at the end of 1996, while drummer Iggor left in 2006. Max formed Soulfly in 1997, and later Cavalera Conspirace with Iggor in 2007. The pair also tour as Cavalera, during which they perform classic Sepultura songs.
