Steve Lacy has teamed up with SZA for their confessional new duet “is it cool?,” the second single from his upcoming album, Oh yeah? Stream it below.
To open the track, Lacy admits to occasionally being a cheater. Now, though, he really wants to settle down. “I really want [to] commit,” Lacy sings. “Really, really want commitment/ Can’t keep fucking shit up.” Attempting to convince a lover to stay, he implores that “we could die any day” as a reason why they should hook up.
If that sounds like a bit of hypocrisy, Lacy later clarifies he’s trying his best: “I never learned to love properly/ The mind be playing tricks when the heart’s involved/ I proceed to self-sabotage.” In response, SZA shows her understanding with lyrics like, “Can we get naked instead of talking, babe?/ I ain’t trippin’, we both got options, babe.”
Oh yeah? is out July 17th and also includes the lead single “the feeling.” As revealed in the newly unveiled tracklist, the follow-up to 2022’s Gemini Rights also features appearances from Erykah Badu and Cecile Believe. Pre-orders for Oh yeah? are ongoing.
In August, Lacy will head out on his first shows in support of the album, an Asian run including headlining slots at Summer Sonic and Lalala festival. Get tickets here.
