The Power of 3, a new supergroup power trio featuring Orianthi, Cindy Blackman Santana, and Rhonda Smith, have announced their self-titled debut album, due out December 11th via She2Music. Ahead of its release, the band has unveiled two songs, lead single “War in the Streets” backed with “Treat Me Like a Lady.”
“War in the Streets” is a Hendrix-style bluesy rocker. The three virtuosos dig in to the track, foregoing mind-blowing pyrotechnics on their instruments to instead focus on the unique magic of three greats jamming on a great riff without concern for simplicity or radio motivations. The bass especially is active and deep in the pocket, with the drums producing an energetic core. The closing minute is a lengthy guitar solo from Orianthi that’s as singable and hooky as any of the vocal melodies.
The credits for the three musicians is staggering. Orianthi was the original selected guitarist for the planned This Is It concert residency for Michael Jackson, and has played with Alice Cooper and has carved out an impressive solo career.
Cindy Blackman Santana has played with greats ranging from her husband Carlos Santana to Pharoah Sanders to John McLaughlin, and landed at No. 20 on Consequence‘s list of the 100 Best Drummers of All Time.
Rhonda Smith played extensively with Prince and Jeff Beck, and came in at No. 35 on our list of the 100 Best Bassists of All Time.
Orianthi stated of the project, “I know people all over the world want to see us. And we can’t wait. It’ll be so much fun to get out there. Playing together with Cindy and Rhonda, this is like a powerhouse. It’s not just me… this is a real band.”
