The War on Drugs have returned with their first new studio recording released since 2022, paired with a music video directed by Max Flick. Stream it below.
Written and produced by frontman Adam Granduciel at his studio compound in Southern California, “Who’s That” graduates from a steady rock pulse into a dreamy sprawl that makes full use of its five-minute runtime. Anthony LaMarca handles drums, Dave Hartley supplies bass, and Granduciel layers the track with electric guitars and keyboards.
Lyrically, that sense of momentum runs against a much heavier internal struggle. Granduciel struggles with emotional imbalance while searching for some measure of control over his many feelings, eventually returning to the refrain, “It’s only my depression, baby.”
“‘Who’s That’ was written in 10 minutes somewhere between first coffee and school drop off,” Granduciel explained in a statement. “It’s a song about trying to love yourself despite things we can’t always control, like the anxiety, depression and self doubt that may stand in the way of living the life we truly desire.”
The accompanying visual follows Granduciel on a surreal late-night walk through the streets of Burbank.
“Who’s That” arrives as The War on Drugs continue work on the follow-up to 2021’s I Don’t Live Here Anymore. Earlier this year, Granduciel revealed that the band was “almost done making a record,” describing the still-unannounced project as “basically fully homemade” and an attempt to reconnect with the approach behind some of his earlier records.
In the years since their last full-length studio record, The War on Drugs released the concert album Live Drugs Again in 2024. Granduciel also co-produced and performed across Sam Fender’s 2025 album, People Watching.
The band will return to the road later this month for a string of US dates and festival appearances, beginning September 18th in Wilmington, Delaware. Their itinerary also includes Sea.Hear.Now, Bourbon & Beyond, and two weekends at Austin City Limits.
