On “Oh No Now My,” Amos stacks vocal harmonies to The Beach Boys’ levels over low-tuned indie rock guitars to create a melancholy song that evokes emotion from the lyrics more so than literal meaning. His ambiguous use of the word “miss” in the lyrics creates the pathos with lines like “Joey I wish you didn’t make me miss so much” and “Joey I don’t wanna let you miss so much,” while he continues to center a character, like he did in the preceding single “Billy Came Back,” to heighten the sentiment. Amos said in a statement, “‘Oh No Now My’ is a song that ate itself — there were three versions of it before it landed here, where it has nothing in common with the original. I think it’s good but it’s hard to sing.”
The Singer in My Band comes out September 11th on Matador Records. Pre-orders for the album are available here. Amos hits the road this fall to support the album.
