Swedish pop crooner Tove Lo has announced her sixth studio album, and first since 2022’s excellent Dirt Femme. Spanning 13 tracks, ESTRUS is due out September 18th via Pretty Swede Records/Virgin Music Group.
If you were unaware, ESTRUS refers to “female mammals in heat.” Tonally speaking, that’s precisely what Tove Lo was going for (per a press release), channeling faves like The Knife and Robyn to further explore that musical space “somewhere between hedonism and vulnerability.” To accomplish just that, Tove Lo once more teamed up with longtime collaborator Ludvig Söderberg (as well as newer collaborators Elvira Anderfjärd and Luka Kloser), with the collective recording in a small Swedish fish village from the singer’s childhood.
The entire, deeply personal process allowed Tove Lo the rare opportunity to “get to the core of herself,” revisiting painful traumas like family issues, break-ups, and even an eating disorder. But through all that difficult, difficult examination, the singer found a deep-seated, essential truth: “Estrus is an animal in heat. It’s primal. It’s my mind and my body wanting different things, wanting everything. There’s no good advice on this album…just a lot of feelings, no solutions.” Because sometimes you’ve just got to dance it all out, right?
Our first taste of ESTRUS comes with “I’m your girl right?” Keeping with the album’s theme of “all emotions, not solutions,” the song’s chipper, extra kinetic dance grooves serve as a nice counter to the purer emotional expression at the track’s core. Yet what it might lack in overt thematic heft, the song more than makes up for with this undeniable groove and singular relatability. In support of ESTRUS, Tove Lo has also announced a North American tour slated for this fall. Right now, there’s six shows scheduled for late September to early October, with stops in Nashville, Chicago, Brooklyn, Toronto, Los Angeles, and Mexico City. The tour’s pre-sale begins Monday, May 18th at 1 p.m. local time, with the general on-sale following on Wednesday, May 20th at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster.
