Violet Grohl is the latest guest to appear on Triple J’s Like a Version series, performing a cover of The Cure’s “High.”
Backed by just an acoustic guitar, Grohl opted to strip “High” down to a barebones arrangement that highlights the original’s majestic composition and her own warm alto. The dreamy rendition echoes some of the softer moments on Be Sweet to Me, Grohl’s recently-released debut album; Grohl had previously discussed how bands like The Cure and Cocteau Twins influenced her sound, and her choice of a ’90s-era Cure song is another example of her penchant for hazy, evocative sonics.

In a corresponding interview with Triple J, Grohl revealed that the 1992 track has been a staple across her personal playlists for years. “I love the childlike joy of the lyrics… it’s such a cute love song,” she explained, sharing that her obsession with the band began around age 12 or 13 after hearing “Friday I’m in Love” and immediately diving deep into their discography. Treating the performance as a long-time dream come true, she aimed to capture a “teenage crush kind of feeling” in the studio, while humbly hoping the band’s frontman might approve: “I adore Robert Smith… I would hope that they would at least think it was okay.” Watch her cover of “High,” along with her interview, below.
Grohl served as Consequence‘s May CoSign, diving into the making of her album Be Sweet to Me, her favorite memories from touring alongside Foo Fighters, and her love of festivals. She’ll be making the rounds at a few fests this season, with slots booked at Riot Fest, Shaky Knees, CBGB Festival, All Things Go D.C., and Corona Capital. Grohl will also embark on her own headlining US tour this fall, and join Beabadoobee on her upcoming European tour. Get tickets to see Violet Grohl here.
