Young Miko has reflected on the importance of seeing queer representation in Latin music early in her career, pointing to fellow Puerto Rican artist Kany García as one of the figures who helped provide it.
Asked by ELLE México about being viewed as a queer role model, Miko pointed out that other artists had paved the way before her. “For me, it was super important when Kany García came out,” she said, citing the fellow Puerto Rican singer as an example.
The connection between the two artists eventually became musical. In 2024, they teamed up for “En Esta Boca,” a collaboration from Kany’s album GARCÍA that paired her singer-songwriter roots with Miko’s urban sound.
Miko also spoke about becoming a source of representation herself. She recalled recently meeting a 10-year-old fan backstage who attended her concert with her two mothers. “They were telling me how important it was for them to see someone like me,” Miko said of the encounter, which helped put her own role as a source of queer representation into perspective.
The singer said that awareness has made her increasingly conscious of how she communicates publicly, while acknowledging that representing an entire community is impossible.
