Dewey Finn, un guitarrista que acaba de ser expulsado de su banda de rock "No Vacancy" la cual acumulaimportantes problemas financieros. Mientras intenta vender parte de su equipo para conseguir dinero, Deweyresponde a una llamada telefónica de Rosalie Mullins, la directora de una escuela primaria, preguntando por NedSchneebly, (mejor amigo de Dewey), sobre un puesto a cortoplazo de maestro sustituto. Desesperado por dinero, Dewey se hace pasar por Ned y es contratado como profesor sustituto en unaprestigiosa escuela privada. Ahí descubre que sus estudiantes son músicos muy talentosos y decide formarun grupo de rock con ellos para participar en la gran Batalla de las Bandas y competir contra su antigua banda.
