The Stuttgart Philharmonic, here making its debut, is joined by Mariano Chiacchiarini, one of the most compelling conductors of his generation. Come and discover, or simply immerse yourself in, some familiar classics in this hugely evocative concert, starting with Mendelsson's striking overture. The composer sketched its opening theme on a postcard whilst visiting the echoing sea cave on Staffa and the final work perfectly captures the moody atmosphere of the Scottish seascape. Sibelius' Fifth Symphony is a musical depiction of an unfolding landscape; from the swooping horn calls of its opening, conjuring a slow sunrise over the vast Nordic horizon, to its theatrical ending with six massive chords, separated by silence. Performing one of Mozart's most celebrated piano concertos is Jeneba Kanneh-Mason, who makes a welcome return to Sheffield.
