David Bowie’s wife, Iman, marked the 10th anniversary of her husband’s passing on Saturday by getting a tattoo of the artwork from his final album, ★ (Blackstar).

Iman shared a video on Instagram of herself getting the tattoo. In the accompanying caption, she wrote, “Jan. 10th. The pain didn’t vanish.. It left in its place a loving permanent mark. #BowieForever.”

Jonathan Barnbrook, who designed the artwork for David Bowie’s final album Blackstar, explained its meaning in a past interview with Dezeen: “This was a man who was facing his own mortality. The Blackstar symbol [★], rather than writing ‘Blackstar,’ has as a sort of finality, a darkness, a simplicity, which is a representation of the music…

“The idea of mortality is in there, and of course the idea of a black hole sucking in everything, the Big Bang, the start of the universe, if there is an end of the universe. These are things that relate to mortality.”
