David Byrne is turning his “Who Is the Sky?” world tour into a concert film, directed by filmmaker Brady Corbet.
Shot over multiple nights at the Hippodrome Theatre in the art pop icon’s hometown of Baltimore, it documents a production that has logged more than 150 performances across four continents since launching last September. Captured on 70mm film, the project is currently in post-production.
“When Brady told me he wanted to shoot our show in 70 millimeter (70 millimeter!) I didn’t realize what a difference it would make until I saw some frames he sent me,” Byrne, who is producing the film, said in a statement. “He was right, it really does capture the wide screen visual scope of the show. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
The last film Corbet directed was The Brutalist, which earned 10 nominations at the 2025 Academy Awards and won three: Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Actor for Adrien Brody. Although Corbet’s nomination for Best Director didn’t result in an Oscar win, he did secure the accolade at the Golden Globes and BAFTAs.
His collaboration with Byrne adds another chapter to the latter’s long relationship with concert films. In 2020, Spike Lee adapted his Broadway production of American Utopia for the screen and even secured two Emmy Awards for it. A few years later, in 2023, a restored edition of the Talking Heads classic Stop Making Sense returned to theaters.
Byrne’s current production features a 13-person ensemble of musicians, singers, and dancers in constant motion around the stage. The setlist draws from 2025’s Who Is the Sky? as well as Talking Heads staples like “Psycho Killer,” “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody),” “Life During Wartime,” and “Burning Down the House.” Earlier this year, the 74-year-old legend brought a condensed version of the show to Coachella.
News of the film arrives as he heads into the final stretch of the tour. He is set to play back-to-back shows at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles this weekend before heading to Mexico for dates in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. After one more stop in New York’s Saratoga Springs, he will wrap up the concert series at Forest Hills Stadium on September 19th.
