The Toho Studios movie Godzilla Minus One was one of the best surprises of 2023, and so it’s hard not to get overhyped for writer/director Takashi Yamazaki’s upcoming sequel Godzilla Minus Zero, which is set to premiere this November.
The returning cast includes Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Miou Tanaka, and Sae Nagatani. According to the official description, “Godzilla Minus Zero picks up in 1949, two years after the tumultuous events of Godzilla Minus One, and continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity.” As revealed by the first teaser trailer, this will involve a trip to New York for the big guy.
The new trailer gives new reason to be hyped, promising more of the balance between human stories and city-stomping action that made the first movie such a delight. In this case, humanity seems so desperate to rid itself of Godzilla that it’s willing to answer one apocalypse with another, dropping a nuclear bomb and hoping the monster dies before the world does.
Godzilla Minus One made history as the first non-English language movie to win the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, and Minus Zero may be an equally powerful contender in next year’s awards race. The new film premieres November 3rd in Japan and November 6th worldwide — check out the latest trailer below, and also see where Godzilla’s nemesis King Ghidorah lands on our ranking of film and TV’s best dragons.
