Haruomi Hosono has announced his 23rd studio album, Yours Sincerely, and his first US shows in seven years.
Due out September 11th via Ghostly International, Yours Sincerely was created over two years with the aim of expressing Japanese ideas of “omoiyari,” “jihi,” and “boseiai” in English. It features arrangements that span tender exploratory folk and bubbling avant pop while exploring the intersection of maternity and nature and “humanity’s understanding of the unconditional love possessed by those who give us life.”

A legend in Japanese pop and rock as well as a pioneer of electronic music, the 78-year-old musician sometimes known as Harry Hosono said in a press release, “I feel a growing curiosity toward the unknown music that my new self will create, while also embracing the music of my former self — as if I now carry two musical worlds within me.”
Hosono will play a duo of concerts in the US after the release of Yours Sincerely. He’ll perform on September 16th at Radio City Music Hall in New York and September 20th at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Toro Y Moi will open both shows.
An artist pre-sale on tickets, granted by pre-ordering the new album at ghostly.com, begins on Tuesday, May 26th at 10:00 a.m. local time. A Live Nation pre-sale will then launch on Thursday, May 28th at 10:00 a.m. local time. Fans can sign up for Live Nation’s free All Access membership to receive access. Hosono was a founding member of Happy End, which helped establish Japanese rock in the 1970s. As a founder of Yellow Music Orchestra, he laid the foundation for electronic music to come. Yellow Magic Orchestra’s 1979 album Solid State Survivor topped Japan’s album chart and sold more than two million copies. The album influenced synth-pop, techno, and hip-hop.
Ginger Root, Vampire Weekend, and Harry Styles have cited Hosono as an inspiration. Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig sampled Hosono’s music on the Grammy-winning Father of the Bride.
