Songwriter, producer, and 4 Non Blondes singer Linda Perry reveals she once kicked Billy Corgan out of a studio while she was working with Courtney Love because the Smashing Pumpkins frontman was a “Debbie Downer.”
Perry co-wrote multiple songs on Love’s 2004 solo album America’s Sweetheart, and Hole’s 2010 comeback album Nobody’s Daughter, while also co-producing the latter. Corgan also co-wrote a few songs on the Hole album, but Perry apparently didn’t like the “vibe” he brought to the studio.

“We were working on a record once when Billy Corgan came in and he was a Debbie Downer and ruining the vibe,” began Perry in a new interview with NME. “Courtney and Billy have incredible history together, but my band said, ‘We can’t continue with this guy’. Finally, I went into the control room, looked at Billy and said: ‘You gotta go, man.’”
She continued, “As Courtney’s eyes bulged, I said, ‘You’re walking around like you’re God’s gift to fucking rock ’n’ roll. You’ve got bad energy. I want you out of my studio.’ Billy was shocked and left.”
Perry went on to say that Love is really a softie deep down inside, adding, “I realized: ‘Oh, she’s a pussy!’ Courtney acts like this tough person — and she is. She’s very intimidating, but really she is a bottom. She wants to be kind and wants a hug and she’s very gentle, but she has an armor she puts up.”
These days, Perry is working with Love on her long-awaited follow-up to America’s Sweetheart. She concluded, “I love her and have had amazing experiences with her. The world needs Courtney Love back and I can’t wait for her new record because there isn’t anyone else like her.”
Perry’s candid revelation about Corgan follows in line with her recent brutally honest comments about other music luminaries, including her interview with Consequence in which she called Madonna “weak” for following trends with her recent music releases. In the NME interview, she also labeled Billie Joe Armstrong a “pussy” for allegedly dropping her as a producer of a Green Day album.
