Mastodon have announced a new vinyl edition of their latest album, Marrow Deep, pressed with real mastodon fossils.
The vinyl is made using a bag of non-display worthy real fossilized mastodon teeth the band was gifted roughly 20 years ago.
The making of the vinyl involved a multi-partner collaboration between Loma Vista Recordings, Waxworks Records, and the University of Georgia’s geology department. The members of Mastodon then personally sprinkled the usable mastodon fossil dust onto the platters as part of the pressing process.
The mastodon-fossil edition of Marrow Deep, which earned a stellar review from Consequence, is strictly limited to 170 copies. Purchase eligibility will be determined by draw to ensure an equal opportunity for fans and collectors of all sorts. Mastodon, with John Baizley of Baroness in their touring lineup, are currently on their acclaimed “Poisonous Weapons” tour with Deafheaven and Alcest. Get tickets here.
