Metallica’s Robert Trujillo and Kirk Hammett covered Rammstein’s “Sonne” during the band’s concert in Berlin on Saturday, May 30th.
The performance is just the latest in a long line of region-specific covers played by the two during their mid-concert “doodle” jams on Metallica’s ongoing “M72 World Tour.”
The crowd immediately joins in with Robert Trujillo, who shows a surprisingly commanding German singing voice. Even lacking drums and a fuller dual guitar sound, the song feels massive, a fact underscored by the fans’ outsized response to the song by their countrymen.
Previous performances, called “doodles” by the band, include “El Paso” by Marty Robbins, “When Doves Cry” by Prince, and “Major Tom” by Peter Schilling, showcasing the wide range the duo have pulled from.
Following Metallica’s current UK/European run, the band will prepare for a residency at Las Vegas’ Sphere set to begin October 1st, and run all the way through March 13th, 2027. Tickets are available here.
