Modest Mouse have announced their new album, An Eraser and a Maze, due out June 5th via Glacial Pace and Virgin Records. As a preview, the band has unveiled a new single, “Picking Dragon’s Pockets,” and expanded their upcoming North American tour with an additional leg of headlining dates that will keep them on the road through the fall.
Lead singer Isaac Brock began working on the new collection of songs immediately following 2021’s The Golden Casket. With six songs that could have formed an EP, Brock considered releasing them under his side project, Ugly Casanova, but ultimately decided on creating a new Modest Mouse album. He produced the project with additional production by Jackknife Lee (U2, The Killers), Suzy Shinn (Weezer), and Justin Raisen (Charli xcx, Kim Gordon, Lil Yachty). Pre-orders are ongoing.
“For this one, I turned off my filter and just let it all happen,” Brock said. “Even though every goddamn musician says that when they put out a record. I mean, go ahead and listen to the three-minute mark of any interview between a musician and Terry Gross…”
He continued, “Thoughts, emotions, feelings, all that stuff… you’re like the soup, and it’s not always easy to pick out the ingredients. I don’t dwell on things much. I don’t grieve much. I’m not sure I’m a person. I feel like I should have more feelings than I do. But then, you know, I’ll sing stuff. And I’m like, Oh, there it is. Oh — it’s in there.”
Expanding upon their previously announced string of headline dates and festival appearances throughout the summer, Modest Mouse will continue to mark 30 years as a band with additional shows in September and October. The fall dates include stops in cities such as Toronto, New York, New Orleans, Austin, and Phoenix. Tickets for these newly announced dates will go on sale beginning Friday, April 24th at 10:00 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster.
“Picking Dragon’s Pocket” is the second single from An Erase and a Maze after “Look How Far. . .” was unveiled in March.
In May, Modest Mouse are set to kick off their spring tour in Spokane, Washington, with other stops including Virginia Beach, Wilmington, and Charleston. Look for deals and get tickets to sold-out shows for all of their upcoming tour dates here.
