Sir Paul McCartney made his long overdue return to Saturday Night Live, making his first musical guest appearance in 14 years to close out the show’s 51st season.
Macca first performed “Days We Left Behind” from his upcoming album The Boys of Dungeon Lane (out May 29th), before returning to the stage to run through The Wings’ classic “Band on the Run.” He then delivered a rare third song during the closing credits, playing “Coming Up” from his solo album McCartney II. Accompanying him on drums for all three performances was Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The ever-charming McCartney also indulged in a bit of comedy: he appeared alongside Smith and host Will Ferrell during the cold open, and also had played a car mechanic in a sketch alongside Ferrell and Marcello Hernandez.
Saturday marked McCartney’s first turn as SNL’s musical guest in 14 years (not counting his appearances on the show’s 40th and 50th anniversary specials), and his fifth time overall.
