Tegan and Sara have teamed up with Lights on a new single titled “Our Year.” Stream it below.
Produced by Felix Cartal, the song marks the duo’s first new music since their 2022 album, Crybaby. The accompanying music video was directed by Kyle S. Lee.
Tegan initially sent the demo for “Our Year” to Cartal, who produced the track before they recruited Lights to complete the West Coast Canadian alliance.
“We were hoping to get Lights on the track,” Tegan said in a statement. “The moment she came on board, it was clear we were onto something special.”
An ode to Vancouver as well as a tongue-in-cheek response to its cost of living, the song plays the optimism of a fresh start against the nagging sense that circumstances outside your control could derail it. Lights described it as a way of “venting about the economy” without abandoning the hope of things eventually getting better.
“At this stage in our career, we want everything we release to feel grounded and purposeful, but also fun,” Tegan added. “Community has always been at the heart of what we do, so bringing in other artists to build this track together was an incredible experience.”
The duo’s return to music also comes shortly after Tegan released her debut middle-grade novel, Merry Christmess, earlier this month. The book launched the Clementine Twins series, which follows twin sisters attempting to reunite their parents for Christmas.
