Tricky Announces New Album Different When It’s Silent, Shares “Out of Place”: Stream

Trip-hop innovator Tricky is back with the announcement of a new album, Different When It’s Silent, out July 17th via False Idols. As a teaser, he has also released the chaotic closing track, “Out of Place.” Stream it below.

Different When It’s Silent marks Tricky’s 15th studio album and his first full-length release under the moniker in six years. Recorded in his home in France and sessions in Bristol, the album features singer Mitch Sanders contributing soulful vocals throughout. In a press release, the record is described as blending “skeletal blues, brooding electronics, distorted guitars, and stark hip-hop rhythms into a sound that feels both stripped-back and expansive.”

In a statement, Tricky explained that he initially thought the new material was “another side project,” but his manager, Alan McGee, offered a different opinion. “I’m grateful I’ve had the chance to live this life and keep creating,” he added.

Originally written for longtime collaborator Marta’s own album, “Out of Place” melds her haunting vocals with Tricky’s intense, almost spoken-word delivery — all over a wobbling, bass-heavy instrumental.

Tricky’s most recent album, Fall to Pieces, was released in 2020. Since then, he has released music through several collaborative projects, including 2021’s Lonely Guest, 2024’s Fifteen Days with Mike Theis, and a joint album titled Out the Way with Marta. Pre-orders for Different When It’s Silent are ongoing.

Up next, Tricky has a tour of the UK and Europe set for May and June. See the schedule below, and tickets can be purchased here.
